The Ideal Candidate Join us at Artstone Garden Sculpture working for well-known Sculptor Christine Baxter! Visit Christine’s website www.chrisbaxtersculptor.co.uk to find out more about her work, or visit www.courtrobert.co.uk to see where her sculptures are exhibited.
We have a beautiful working environment, surrounded by glorious countryside. We have members of the public who come to see our exhibitions too, meaning you’ll be able to liaise with customers on a frequent basis in the coming summer months.
At Artstone, through hard work and attention to detail we gain great satisfaction. In producing fantastic garden sculpture, we’re there from the initial casting to the finishing and patination of the final work. There is a lot of work that goes into this production, and we’re looking for a candidate who’s willing to learn such specialist skills. What you’ll learn will vary from creating fiberglass and silicone moulds to plaster and latex moulds. You can expect to learn about different casting materials too, such as concrete, plaster, iron and bronze resin, and various other polymers. Plus, we’ll be exhibiting at various Garden Exhibitions all around the country - which you can come along and assist with!
The role will be diverse, with each day different to the next. There will be some physical work involved in the casting of moulds, as well as responsibilities in mould maintenance. Additionally, you’ll be on hand to contribute to basic machinery maintenance and learn various finishing techniques including knowledge of patination.
This is very much a learn-on-the-job position, with the work being divided into weekly blocks. Each week will see new skills being gradually introduced as you progress towards a basic knowledge and competence in mould-making. Bearing in mind a highly skilled mould-maker can undertake an apprenticeship that will take years, we’re giving you the opportunity to learn the foundation skills within three months. Educational skills are not necessary – apart from basic literacy and numeracy. But good practical skills are highly valued!
Plus, there may be opportunities to study some aspects in short college courses alongside the role, or via work set by Artstone e.g. Work Assessments.
High level of practical skills with an interest in the physical properties of materials
Someone who likes to see a project from start to end
Takes pride in producing high quality work
Good attention to detail
Able to follow instruction
Eager and willing to learn
Organised and methodical worker
Please don’t apply if you’re colour blind as we’ll be teaching patination and colour skills
Although what you’ll be learning will be very industry specific to our field, the skills you’ll learn will be extremely transferrable to other industries that use mould-making.
